How Myanmar Kills Dissent | VICE on SHOWTIME
After a February 2021 military coup pushed out the democratically elected government in Myanmar, peaceful street protests against the military spread across the nation. What followed was an iron fisted military crackdown with more than a thousand protesters killed, and a steady descent into violent conflicts as the country slowly fractures. Early in the protests, Burmese poets inspired the protestors. A storied artform in Myanmar, poets have long played an important role in standing up against military rule. Now, they have become targets for censorship and killings. Using forensic video evidence, VICE News’ Ben C. Solomon tells the story of one poet, K Za Win, and his ultimately tragic push to rally the nation against military oppression. Watch VICE on SHOWTIME Sundays at 8PM ET/PT.
