Ukrainian Soldiers Are Preparing for Russia to Invade (Again)
Although it's deployed more than 100,000 troops and military hardware to its border, Russia insists it's not about to invade Ukraine again. The US and its allies aren't so sure. Caught in the middle, Ukraine is appealing for calm – and more Western weapons to defend itself. We report from the frontlines of the ongoing conflict, as the Ukrainian army steels itself for an escalation. Living Rent-Free Next to Millionaires
For decades, the “anchor-outs” have enjoyed living in rent-free boat homes in the Bay Area. Their boats, anchored just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, float illegally in the sightline of one of the country’s wealthiest zip codes. But now, as enforcement ramps up, their way of life could be coming to an end. How Predator Priests Avoid Jail | System Error
Cases against the Catholic Church over child sex abuse are growing in the United States. Pope Francis has promised “decisive action” on the issue and encouraged the reporting of allegations. But survivors’ advocates allege that the church and its lobbyists oppose legislation that could allow more victims to come forward, and fight against the disclosure of important documents. Kazakhstan's Shoot-to-Kill Policy Makes Its President Stronger than Ever
No one has been watching the recent protests and violent crackdown in Kazakhstan closer than Vladimir Putin, president of regional superpower, Russia. More than 150 people were killed and 10,000 arrested after protests over the price of gas led to Kazakhstan's ruler ordering a shoot to kill policy on protesters. But the sudden instability in the former Soviet state may have surprised Putin, and given him reason to consider his own next moves. Inside California’s Black Market Weed Boom
California voters approved recreational marijuana five years ago, joining a club that has now grown to 18 states and Washington, D.C. The hope was legalization would eventually put illicit operations out of business. But instead, the opposite is happening: The underground market is booming, causing some to warn the regulated system is teetering toward collapse. Business owners face steep taxes and costly red tape, and consumers are finding that better deals can be had outside of licensed stores. We embedded with law enforcement during raids of outlaw operations and spoke with illegal growers and dealers about the market realities in California’s weed economy. There’s a struggle playing out right now between pharmaceutical companies, nonprofits, and other entities over who gets to control and profit off the treatment. The outcome will determine whether the people most likely to benefit from psilocybin therapy will even be able to afford it. What Really Happened to Capitol Police During the Insurrection
On January 6, 2021, hundreds of people breached the United State Capitol Building in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 election. Many participants documented their actions on social media for the world to see. The attack left 5 dead, at least 138 police officers injured and resulted in more than $30 million in damage and security upgrades. On July 27, four of the police officers who helped defend the Capitol that day provided testimony to Congress. In this special episode of Source Material we hear their testimonies and see the violence they were subjected to.
