2,300+ People Are Reported To Have Died After Powerful Earthquakes Struck Turkey and Syria #shorts
At least 2,300 people are reported to have died after a powerful earthquake struck the border region between southern Turkey and northern Syria in the early hours of Monday, leaving a trail of destruction and a growing number of casualties. The quake’s epicentre was near the city of Gaziantep in southern Turkey. Videos shared on social media showed buildings collapsing and people rushing into the streets. The initial reports show a combined toll of 640 deaths and thousands more injured in the cities and towns affected by the aftershocks. According to the US Geological Survey, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 04:17 AM local time with a depth of 17 km near Gaziantep in southeast Turkey. According to Turkish official reports, 284 people have died in seven cities across the southern parts of the country, with 440 people injured as the rescue missions continue. Meanwhile, in northern Syria, state media reported some 230 deaths and multiple injuries, with the government in Damascus declaring a state of emergency in the affected areas.
